NKCAC provides family literacy services through both our LINK and Head Start Programs, each with a different focus and emphasis, but all with the common goals of promoting literacy and improving the literacy levels in the entire family, whether it is the preschooler, siblings, parents, grand parents, aunts, uncles, cousins.

Parents and staff are encouraged to participate in monthly literacy activities in the centers, and family literacy events are held two times a year in the evening. Parents are also invited to assist in the classroom and learn literacy activities they can do at home with their children.
Children are assessed individually as we track their progress toward increasing expressive and receptive language, alliteration and rhyming). Data from these assessments is collected and analyzed three times a year to help teachers plan appropriately for each child's learning needs. Results are shared with parents at each parent-teacher conference. NKCAC Head Start uses the NRS (National Rating System), a literacy screening completed on all four year old children.
