Head Start Children learn about democracy and voting
The children, parents and staff of the Covington Head Start Center enjoyed an exciting visit from state and local government officials on leading up to election day.
This visit from Alecia Webb-Edgington who serves as State Representative of the 63rd District of Kentucky and Butch Callery, Mayor of the City of Covington was timed to the recent Presidential election.
Kentucky State Representative Webb-Edgington and Mayor Callery presented a very basic explanation of the election process and the children cast their vote on a mock ballot. But they didn't vote for president like the rest of the country. They voted for their favorite fruit! The choices were banana, apple and grape, giving the children a nutrition lesson while also learning about democracy. For the 3 and 4 year olds at the Covington Head Start center, grapes were the hands down favorite.
“It’s important to have the children learn at an early age about democracy, elections, voting and active citizenship” said Laurie Wolsing, Head Start Director.
The Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission’s Head Start program serves 444 three and four year old children with low income or children with disabilities.
