Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission wins Kentucky State Weatherization Awards

Lexington, KY- Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission received the 2005-06 Program of Excellence award from the Commonwealth of Kentucky's Weatherization Office in a ceremony held in Lexington, KY in late October,. The award carries a $27,500 cash prize. The Weatherization program is a federally funded energy conservation program that provides a variety of energy conservation measures ranging from furnace repair to duct sealing to preventing air infiltration to adding attic insulation and more.

Criteria for the awards were for agencies who have met or exceeded 100% of their completion goals for the year, must have been under state wide cost for the per home dollar average for the program year, and had a positive monitoring report from the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services.

As a further mark of excellence, Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission also won the Most Innovative award, which carries an additional monetary award.

“We felt that it was important for agencies to recognize the importance of quality in addition to reaching their numerical goals,” said Patrick Flowers of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services and one of the senior program monitors of the Weatherization Program.

Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission weatherized 170 homes in the 2006 program year.

“These awards are designed to recognize excellence in the Kentucky Weatherization Program and to give agencies an incentive to strive to be the best,” said Kip Bowmar, Executive Director from KACA. “These awards show that Kentucky’s Community Action Agencies and Weatherization Programs are striving for excellence.”

The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services contracts with the Kentucky Association for Community Action to operate the program. KACA then uses a network of 22 local Community Action Agencies and one governmental unit to operate the program.

“Statewide the program weatherized over 2,200 homes last year,” said John Benjamin, KACA Energy Program Director. “And in those homes weatherized, we reduced energy consumption by an average of approximately 15-20% per household last year.
