POSITION TITLE:  COOK

REPORTS TO: NUTRITION MANAGER

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: KITCHEN STAFF WITH CONSULTATION OF NUTRITION MANAGER.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operate in compliance with any and all of the policies and procedures as established by NKCAC Head Start and the performance standards as established by the Federal Government regarding program operations to promote and provide quality service delivery to the children, families, and community of our service area.
Fulfill responsibilities as an early childhood development, and health services team member and carry out tasks as outlined in the Component Plan.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work cooperatively with all components of the program.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of staff and clients.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Participate in the annual self assessment.
  • Attend staff meetings and training as required.
  • Follow established child abuse reporting requirements.
  • Assist in recruiting and training parent and community volunteers.
  • Assist in securing in-kind donations to match the required non-Federal share amount each program year.
  • Performance of any other work related task deemed necessary by direct supervisor.
  • Preparation of food for children, staff, and parents under nutrition manager’s guidance.
  • Supervision of nutrition assistants along with input from nutrition manager.
  • Offer input in menu planning meetings with parents and staff.
  • Follow menu in preparing food. Responsible to check and have on hand all necessary ingredients of daily menu.
  • Assists nutrition manager in annual evaluations of kitchen staff.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, organized kitchen that meets all health, sanitation, and safety standards.
  • Assist in monitoring and evaluating the proper receipt of food to assure quality and cost control.
  • Supervise the proper storage and control of waste. Utilize the left over goods properly to avoid spoilage and for cost control. Assist in maintaining the following records as necessary:
  • Amount used and current inventory.
  • Meals served.
  • Requisitions.
  • Maintain a current Food Handlers card.
  • Cooperate and participate in nutritional educational activities for children, parents and staff.
  • Attend training outlined by health department, licensing, USDA, etc.
  • Obtain annual TB test.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Basic knowledge of nutrition.
  • Experience in food preparation for large groups.
  • Proficient record keeping skills.
  • Supervisory skills.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects up to 40 lbs.
  • NKCAC-Head Start cannot employ anyone who has been found by the Cabinet to have abused or neglected a child.
  • Ability to work with people of diverse and varying socio-economic backgrounds.
